Q. I am in the process of rebuilding my credit. My fiancé has been supportive and has volunteered to help by cosigning on a credit card. The problem is, we are having a hard time finding a card that allows a cosigner. What should I do?
A. Most consumers use a secured credit card to rebuild their credit.
These kinds of credit cards require you to establish a line of credit by depositing $200 to $500 with the issuing bank. You can charge up to that amount, pay off those purchases and reuse your line of credit for more purchases.
We advise that you make just one or two purchases a month and pay them off in full and on time. The credit card issuer will report your payments to the credit reporting agencies, and your credit score will gradually improve as you build a history of promptly and reliably paying your bills.
In time, your credit will be good enough to qualify for a regular card.
